Welcome to Eta Chapter of Sigma Chi – the Standard Bearer of the South…
Many will remember “The Standard Bearer” as the name of our chapter’s newsletter that was regularly delivered in the 70’s and 80’s. However, Eta being known as “The Standard Bearer” goes back even further. As noted on our front page, the history of the fraternity stated it so very well in their history of “The ETA”:
From its birth the chapter has been crowned with success. Its “ups and downs” have been comparatively unimportant, and its future is spanned by the bow of promise. The Fraternity chose wisely when it made the ETA its “Standard Bearer” in the South, and well has it fulfilled its trust…”
It’s certainly true there have been a few ups and downs, but overall this chapter has survived them all. Chartered on October 10, 1857 as the fourth chapter in Sigma Chi, Eta has remained in continual operation with the exception of the 13 years that fraternities and secret societies were outlawed on Mississippi college campuses from 1913 – 1926. Eta is the second oldest chapter on the University of Mississippi campus and currently the oldest operating chapter in all of Sigma Chi. Eta also has the largest initiate base in the fraternity.
The purpose of this site is to provide our membership, recruits, alumni and member families with access to news and information about the chapter. We hope you will enjoy it and will participate in its development fully, by providing us with feedback on what you would like to see here.
